What Did You Name Your Wireless Network?

You might be surprised how many people know.

If you’re like me, you didn’t put much thought into naming your wireless network. I just set it up as quickly as I could, hoping I wouldn’t have to read too much techno-babble to follow the directions. I named it after my first dog, Turtle, and accepted the password it automatically created.

A few days ago my son was trying to maximize his time by writing a research paper on his laptop in my car. He connected to the wireless network at my daughter’s dance studio while we were waiting outside for her class to end. As we drove toward our house, his laptop continued to search for wireless networks. We were very surprised by the number of them that were unsecured, and we got a kick out of some of the names we came across. One of my favorites was “Go Away,” which strangely enough, was unsecured. Another was “Gigantic.” Wonder what he was referring to. This might have been the best, though, “FBI Mobil Unit 4.” Unsecured, of course (I think this one belongs to one of my son’s friends).

Here are a few more:

MyHomeWaterfall
PoolRepeater
WasUp
Dognet
BOOMER
Cookie
Pumpkin
GoGoGo
Twirless
BombNet
Sailing
Chica

I’m not going to say which one, but one of these belongs to my next-door neighbor.

So what did you name your wireless network? If you’ve forgotten, I bet some of your neighbors can tell you.

LOL…that is funny. I never thought about it. I’ll have to check with my husband and see what we called ours. I might have to think up a fun name and change it.

    Fun post.

Thanks for stopping by, Cheryl. I never thought about it either, until my son started calling out the names of various networks as we drove past. We now know the exact point on our street where we can access our home network (which is secured).

  2. Take all those names and you can come up with an interesting plot line! Gotta luv “pumpkin.” I actually do know the name of my network, and in a moment I’ll remember it! (grin) Great post!

I think ours is Home. I love some of those names. Most everyone here has a secure line.

I was surprised by the number of unsecured networks coming from private homes. I think I might need to change the name of mine periodically just to entertain the neighbors. Glad you could stop by, Ella.

LOL Love them! The FBI one is a hoot. Wonder if it scares people off. Mine is named Avalon. My husband named it after one my email addresses, which is named for one of my favorite books The Mists Of Avalon.

  5. My wireless network is Wild Kingdom because the computers hooked to it are Black Beauty and Silver Chief 😉 You can see the network name but the system is as secure as I can make it. One of the main things to do is to NOT use the standard password that comes with the wireless router and to NOT use things like your name, your kids’ names, etc. With as much as we do on our computers, you want a really good number and letter combo that will be hard to break into.

I like “Wild Kingdom.” Makes me think of Jim Fowler. I used the password my router set up, but it’s a complicated (and long) combination of upper and lowercase letters and numbers. I had to write it down and put it in a safe place – with five people in the house and a myriad of electronics, it got to be too much to look it up everytime there was a new device to add. Thanks for visiting, Linda!

Great topic! Our is secured. The DH is in IT. He named it Sparrow after his favorite fictional character. I’m sure you can guess! 🙂

    • Ally says:

Ah…another of my favorite characters. I think I need to change the name of my network to something more interesting. Thanks for visiting, Karin!

  7. Angelyn says:

    no kidding–that was hilarious.

    • Ally says:

Though I’ve certainly spent enough time searching for wi-fi in random locations, I never considered that everyone could see my network, even though it’s secured. We had a good laugh about some of those names. Thanks for stopping by, Angelyn.

  8. OMG, that’s funny. I had no idea our wireless had a name, let alone what it is. Hubby set it up, so I’ll have to ask him tonight. I hope it’s something interesting.

  9. Calisa Rhose says:

Too funny! I need to have sil rename ours! It’s just boring numbers now. Wait til I tell him about these. lol Love the FBI one. My neighbors are not nearly as creative though and mine is secured.

    • Ally says:

I’m thinking about renaming mine, except it might be too complicated for me to do without reading the directions. Thanks for coming by, Calisa.
